Music From Miles Around Sponsored by Empire Life

Music From Miles Around, Sponsored by Empire Life is a free, year-long exhibition that explores Kingston’s rich and far-reaching music history, from the sounds and traditions that predate the city to the artists, venues, and community spaces still shaping its music scene today. Through archival materials, artifacts, personal stories, immersive experiences, and interactive elements, the exhibition takes visitors through the people and places that wrote Kingston’s music story. Discover Indigenous musical traditions, church choirs, military bands, early instrument makers, record shops, radio, dance halls, live venues, local bands, and the teachers and community builders who helped generations of musicians find their sound. Visitors can also step into Joe’s Jam Space, supported by Joe’s Music Mill, where they can pick up an instrument and experience music firsthand. As the City marks 10 years since The Tragically Hip’s final hometown concert on August 20, 2016, visitors can experience never-before-seen artifacts, personal stories, and behind-the-scenes pieces connected to Kingston’s most iconic band. But Music From Miles Around, Sponsored by Empire Life goes beyond one band, placing The Hip within the wider music scene that helped shape them. Whether you grew up going to shows in Kingston, remember where you were during The Hip’s final concert, or are looking for a free cultural experience downtown, this exhibition invites you to listen to the city in a whole new way. Visit us in Market Wing Cultural Space inside City Hall
